Apple Search Ads Attribution False in 2026: Check Targeting, Token Timing, and Privacy Detail

An Apple Search Ads install can produce an attribution response that says attribution: false. That result does not always mean your token request or RevenueCat integration is broken.
As of September 2026, RevenueCat documents an important Apple behavior: AdServices returns attribution: false for installs from ad groups that use age or gender targeting.
That change should be the first check when a previously healthy campaign stops producing attributed installs.
Check ad group targeting first
Open the affected Apple Search Ads campaign and inspect the ad group settings. If the ad group uses age or gender targeting, a false attribution result may be expected under the current AdServices behavior.
Compare affected and unaffected ad groups. A useful diagnosis records:
- Campaign identifier.
- Ad group identifier.
- Whether age targeting is enabled.
- Whether gender targeting is enabled.
- App version.
- Install time.
- Attribution request time.
- Returned attribution flag.
Do not remove targeting without evaluating the acquisition consequence. The right action depends on whether attributed reporting or the targeting rule is more valuable for the campaign. The immediate goal is to identify the cause accurately.
Respect the attribution token lifetime
The AdServices framework returns a Base64 encoded attribution token. Apple documents a 24 hour lifetime for that token.
Request the token close to the time when your server will exchange it for attribution data. Do not cache it for later use across launches. An expired token creates a different failure from a valid response with attribution: false.
A clean implementation records token creation and exchange timing without logging the token itself.
Retry an immediate 404 carefully
Apple notes that an attribution request can return a 404 when it is made too quickly. Its documented recovery is to retry after five seconds, up to three times.
This should be a narrow retry rule:
- Request a fresh token.
- Send the attribution request.
- If the response is 404, wait five seconds.
- Retry, with a maximum of three attempts.
- Record the final status and stop.
Do not retry every response indefinitely. A valid attribution: false response is data, not a transient server error. Repeating the same request will not change ad group targeting or privacy eligibility.
Understand standard and detailed attribution
Apple AdServices can return different detail depending on privacy conditions and App Tracking Transparency status. Standard attribution can be available without permission to track. Detailed fields require the conditions Apple specifies.
RevenueCat can collect the token in the app, send it to RevenueCat, and request Apple attribution data. It can then segment trials, subscriptions, revenue, and customer value by available campaign fields.
RevenueCat advises allowing up to seven days for Apple Search Ads data to appear. A missing chart row immediately after install is not enough to declare the integration broken.
Separate four failure classes
Treat these outcomes differently:
| Outcome | Meaning | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Token request fails | The app did not obtain a usable token | Framework call, app configuration, and device logs |
| Exchange returns 404 | Apple may not be ready for the request | Five second retry, up to three attempts |
| Response says `attribution: false` | Apple did not return an attributed install | Age or gender targeting, campaign eligibility, and privacy conditions |
| RevenueCat report is empty | Delivery or reporting may still be processing | Subscriber attributes, integration delivery, and the seven day reporting window |
This separation prevents one generic retry loop from hiding several unrelated causes.
Connect attributed revenue to spend
Campaign attribution becomes actionable when it is compared with cost and subscription revenue.
For each available campaign, ad group, and keyword, combine:
- Apple Search Ads spend.
- AdServices attribution context.
- Trial and subscription events from RevenueCat.
- Refunds and renewals.
- Revenue and customer value.
Grometrics Apple Search Ads attribution connects Apple Search Ads spend with RevenueCat revenue so you can compare keyword cost, trial quality, and return on ad spend. A false attribution response should remain visible as missing attribution. It should never be filled with a guessed campaign.
