Meta says you got 147 conversions last month. Google says 52. TikTok says 38. Add them up: 237. Check Stripe: 89 actual charges.
Somebody's lying. Actually, everybody's lying in the same direction. Every ad platform counts a "conversion" differently, and every definition is generous. Meta counts a view-through: someone saw your ad, didn't click, bought three days later from a Google search, and Meta takes credit. Google counts click-through conversions with a 30-day window. TikTok counts video views.
You're not just overpaying. You're making budget decisions on inflated numbers. You might be scaling your worst channel and cutting your best one, and the platforms will never tell you because they profit from the confusion.
The fix isn't better platform reporting. It's a source of truth that's independent from the platforms. Start with the Stripe charge. Work backward to the source. Compare what actually happened to what they claimed.
Ad platforms grade their own homework. Here's what real tracking looks like.
| Source | They reported | We tracked | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Ads | 147 sales | 89 sales | +65% overclaim |
| Google Ads | 52 sales | 48 sales | +8% |
| TikTok Ads | 38 sales | 12 sales | +216% overclaim |

Grometrics already tracks every Stripe charge back to its traffic source. Now it places platform-reported numbers next to real numbers in the same table.

Each row shows what the platform claimed vs. what actually happened. Overclaim percentages are calculated automatically. Big overclaims get flagged.
Each ad platform row shows "They Reported" vs "We Tracked" with the percentage difference. Overclaims above 50% get a red warning flag. You'll see which platforms are the worst offenders and by how much.
Toggle "Show discrepancies only" to hide platforms within a normal 10% margin and focus on the ones that need attention. Most users find at least one platform overclaiming by 30% or more.
Your actual return on ad spend, calculated from real Stripe charges instead of platform-reported conversions. If Meta says your ROAS is 4.2x but the real number is 1.8x, you need to know before you increase the budget.
When you can see which platforms overclaim the most, you can reallocate spend toward the channels that actually convert. Some Grometrics users have cut 30–40% of their ad spend with no revenue impact.
“Google Ads was reporting 52 conversions. Grometrics tracked 48, which was close enough. But Meta was reporting 147 when the real number was 89. We'd been scaling a campaign that was 65% hot air.”
