Apple Search Ads Cohort Analysis: Measure Renewal Revenue by Keyword
The comparison only works when every cohort has a clear start date, attribution definition, revenue window, and cost window. Without those boundaries, older cohorts win simply because they had more time to earn.

Apple Search Ads cohort analysis answers a question that install reports cannot: which acquisition groups keep producing subscription revenue after the first purchase. A keyword with expensive installs can outperform a cheaper keyword when its customers convert, renew, and refund less.
The comparison only works when every cohort has a clear start date, attribution definition, revenue window, and cost window. Without those boundaries, older cohorts win simply because they had more time to earn.
Choose the cohort key
Start with one stable acquisition dimension. Campaign is useful for budget allocation. Ad group can separate audience or theme. Keyword is the most precise level when Apple returns it and volume is sufficient.
Use stable identifiers for grouping and current names for display. A renamed keyword or campaign should not split one historical cohort into two. Keep Unspecified as a real reporting group when Apple attributes the install but omits a detailed field.
- Install or acquisition date.
- Campaign identifier.
- Ad group identifier.
- Keyword identifier when available.
- Country or region when spend differs materially.
Define the revenue window
A day seven cohort and a day ninety cohort answer different questions. Select standard windows such as day zero, day seven, day thirty, day sixty, and day ninety. Calculate revenue only from customers acquired in the cohort, then include events that occurred within the selected age window.
Do not compare a three day old cohort with a ninety day old cohort using lifetime revenue. Either wait for maturity or compare both at the same cohort age.
- Initial purchase revenue at day zero.
- Trial conversion revenue within the chosen window.
- Renewal revenue through the cohort age.
- Refunds applied to the same cohort.
- Net revenue after reversals.
Connect Apple context to RevenueCat value
RevenueCat collects available Apple Search Ads attribution and can segment subscription, trial, revenue, lifetime value, and conversion charts by campaign fields. Apple remains responsible for attribution eligibility and for the fields returned by AdServices.
The useful join keeps the customer acquisition context stable while RevenueCat lifecycle events accumulate. A renewal should increase the value of the original keyword cohort. It should not create a new acquisition under the customer's most recent visit.
- Preserve the original campaign context.
- Attach purchases and renewals to the same customer.
- Subtract refunds from the same cohort.
- Keep missing attribution visible rather than inferred.
Compare cost at the same level
Use spend from the same campaign, ad group, keyword, country, and acquisition dates as the cohort. Mixing monthly spend with a weekly customer cohort produces a misleading acquisition cost.
Calculate install CPA, paying customer CAC, and net return separately. Each denominator answers a different question. A strong install rate can still produce weak paying customer economics.
- Install CPA equals cohort spend divided by attributed installs.
- Paying customer CAC equals cohort spend divided by customers who paid.
- Net ROAS equals cohort net revenue divided by cohort spend.
- Payback indicates when cumulative net revenue reaches spend.
Handle privacy limited and missing data
Standard Apple Search Ads attribution can be available without App Tracking Transparency permission, while detailed data has additional conditions. Some attributed installs can lack keyword detail. Some campaigns can return false attribution under current targeting rules.
Report coverage beside performance. A keyword table without an attributed share can make a small visible subset look like the whole campaign.
- Attributed install share.
- Share with campaign detail.
- Share with keyword detail.
- Revenue in Unspecified and Organic groups.
- Customers with no usable attribution context.
Maturity before winners: Rank cohorts only after they share the same age window. Early revenue is useful, but it is not lifetime value.
Turn cohorts into budget decisions
Use early windows for rapid warning and mature windows for budget confidence. A keyword that wins at day seven but loses after refunds and churn needs a different decision from one that starts slowly and renews strongly.
Grometrics Apple Search Ads attribution combines spend, available Apple attribution, app journeys, and RevenueCat revenue so teams can compare keyword cohorts using paying customer outcomes. Preserve the frozen cohort result used for each decision. Later renewals can update current value, but they should not rewrite what the team knew when it changed the budget.
